{"id":12723,"date":"2008-04-06T09:46:58","date_gmt":"2008-04-06T13:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=12723"},"modified":"2014-01-14T10:13:28","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T15:13:28","slug":"what-it-was-was-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/06\/what-it-was-was-football\/","title":{"rendered":"What it was was football"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With George Clooney&#8217;s film <i>Leatherheads<\/i> opening this weekend, taking us back to football of the 1920s, it seems like a good time to return to the time machine here as well.  <\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve shared before, I love digging through century-old magazines, and one of my favorite essays from that period is this one by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elbert_Hubbard\" target=\"_blank\">Elbert Hubbard<\/a>, which was printed in the March 1903 issue of <i>The Cosmopolitan<\/i>, a magazine we&#8217;ve visited here before.<\/p>\n<p>If you attack football in this country today, you might as well be attacking Mom and apple pie, but things were obviously different 105 years ago, as reflected in  &#8220;A Gladiatorial Renaissance,&#8221; which was published in the magazine&#8217;s &#8220;Men, Women and Events&#8221; section.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the excerpt below to learn just how many men were killed playing football in 1902, and how many driven mad.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football1-176x300.jpg\" alt=\"Football1\" width=\"176\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football1-176x300.jpg 176w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football1.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He continues on to say&#151;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>But the point I make is this: football makes no man better; makes no man more useful; helps no man to do better work.<\/p>\n<p>A man may be a pretty good fellow in spite of football, but no man is more of a man because he plays football.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And here are Hubbard&#8217;s final words on the matter, as he predicts that football will eventually fade away:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football2-300x122.jpg\" alt=\"Football2\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football2-300x122.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Football2.jpg 472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With George Clooney&#8217;s film Leatherheads opening this weekend, taking us back to football of the 1920s, it seems like a good time to return to the time machine here as well.
