{"id":12587,"date":"2008-02-23T16:26:55","date_gmt":"2008-02-23T21:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=12587"},"modified":"2014-01-21T23:47:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-22T04:47:32","slug":"i-go-pogo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/02\/23\/i-go-pogo\/","title":{"rendered":"I go Pogo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Di Filippo and others have been bitten by the <i>Pogo<\/i> bug recently, sharing <a href=\"http:\/\/scottedelman.livejournal.com\/friends?skip=160#theinferior4302395\" target=\"_blank\">this animated cartoon<\/a> and  <a href=\"http:\/\/scottedelman.livejournal.com\/friends#theinferior4304769\" target=\"_blank\">this Claymation version<\/a> adapted from Walt Kelly&#8217;s classic comic strip.  <\/p>\n<p>For those who aren&#8217;t old enough or whose memories aren&#8217;t long enough, <i>Pogo<\/i> was yesterday&#8217;s <i>Bloom County<\/i>, though I&#8217;m not sure  that&#8217;s truly  a sufficient comparison as far as Pogo&#8217;s whimsy and satire are concerned. I guess <i>Pogo<\/i> truly stands alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PogoScott.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PogoScott-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"PogoScott\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PogoScott-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PogoScott-786x1024.jpg 786w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PogoScott.jpg 1664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back when I was attending Brooklyn&#8217;s South Shore High School, I became friendly with artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuben.org\/ncs\/members\/biogs\/kresse.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Kresse<\/a>, thanks to a school trip to the <i>New York Daily News<\/i>.  He introduced me to other staff cartoonists at the paper, and ended up inviting me to a few National Cartoonist Society banquets, which was Valhalla to a young fan.  <\/p>\n<p>One of the many cartoonists I met thanks to Kresse was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrymccracken.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/15\/george-ward-the-greatest-cartoonist-who-ever-lived\/\" target=\"_blank\">George Ward<\/a>, who was Walt Kelly&#8217;s assistant on <i>Pogo<\/i>.  <\/p>\n<p>When I headed off to college, some of those cartoonists drew going-away illustrations for me, including Ward, who certainly proved with this image why Kelly trusted him to draw many of the strip&#8217;s Sunday pages entirely on his own. <\/p>\n<p>I sure miss <i>Pogo<\/i>.
