G. Ballard&#8217;s <i>Crash<\/i><\/a>, it will be time to turn your hand to re-envisioning Eustace Tilley, the monocled character who has been <i>The New Yorker<\/i>&#8216;s iconic mascot since 1925.<\/p>\n<p>Those unfamiliar with this cover boy can find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/archive\/2005\/02\/14\/050214fa_fact2\" target=\"_blank\">an essay laying out the history of  Eustace Tilley here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/covers\/slideshow_tilleycovers?viewall=true#showHeader\" target=\"_blank\">Contest rules, plus some of the more unusual versions already done of the character, can be found here.<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CharlesBurnsTheNewYorker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CharlesBurnsTheNewYorker-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"CharlesBurnsTheNewYorker\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CharlesBurnsTheNewYorker-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CharlesBurnsTheNewYorker.jpg 323w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most bizarre?  This unsettling riff by Charles Burns, whose work  I first became familiar with  in magazines such as <i>Raw<\/i> and <i>Heavy Metal<\/i>.  Back then, I&#8217;d never have dreamed that he&#8217;d be allowed in the pages of <i>The New Yorker<\/i>.
