{"id":12417,"date":"2008-01-08T17:17:15","date_gmt":"2008-01-08T22:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=12417"},"modified":"2014-01-11T13:38:10","modified_gmt":"2014-01-11T18:38:10","slug":"our-greatest-adventures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/01\/08\/our-greatest-adventures\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Greatest Adventures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oddballcomics.com\/article.php?story=2008-01-07\" target=\"_blank\">The latest installment of <i>Scott Shaw&#8217;s Oddball Comics<\/i><\/a> focuses on the May, 1960 issue of <i>My Greatest Adventure<\/i>, one of DC&#8217;s anthology comic books of science-fiction shorts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/MyGreatestAdventureCover43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/MyGreatestAdventureCover43-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"MyGreatestAdventureCover43\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/MyGreatestAdventureCover43-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/MyGreatestAdventureCover43.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Included in the issue are such stories as &#8220;We Were Ruled By The Emperor-Beast,&#8221; &#8220;I Fought The Sonar Creatures,&#8221; &#8220;I Became A Human Space Ship,&#8221; and more, featuring bizarre invading aliens, an atomic transmutator that converts sounds into colors and force, and a tunnel through the center of the Earth that manages to ignore the existence of the planet&#8217;s molten core.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, really bad science fiction.  And yet also somehow quite lovable. In fact, much of yesterday&#8217;s bad science fiction has become strangely lovable. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Which led me to think&#151;if yesterday&#8217;s bad SF can become lovable, does that mean that contemporary bad SF, the wretched stuff that offends me so today, will someday seem lovable in retrospect, too?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible.  But yesterday&#8217;s bad SF had some things going for it which today&#8217;s bad SF does not.  <\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s bad SF was naive.  Today&#8217;s bad SF is mercenary.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s bad SF was primitive.  Today&#8217;s bad SF is polished.<\/p>\n<p>Time alone won&#8217;t erase those differences. Still, I&#8217;m willing to consider  that some sort of nostalgic metamorphosis will occur anyway.
