I don&#8217;t recall the full details of what share of the finished art the penciller and inker received, but I ended up with two pages per book. And sometimes the backs of those pages are as interesting as the fronts.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side of page 10 from issue #49&#8212;the first issue I wrote&#8212;is a rough pencil sketch of the villain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marvunapp.com\/Appendix4\/cheetahcapmarv.htm\">The Cheetah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvelBackSketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvelBackSketch-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"CaptainMarvelBackSketch\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvelBackSketch-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvelBackSketch-693x1024.jpg 693w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvelBackSketch.jpg 1174w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I assume the sketch is by Al Milgrom, the penciller for that issue. Here&#8217;s what the character looks like inked and in color, as seen from his introduction on the cover of <em>Captain Marvel<\/em> #48, which is the previous issue.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvel48CoverDetail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvel48CoverDetail-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"CaptainMarvel48CoverDetail\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvel48CoverDetail-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/CaptainMarvel48CoverDetail.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The supervillain only appeared in a few panels of <em>Captain Marvel<\/em> #49, and not in any pose similar to the above sketch.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why Al (if indeed it was Al) roughed out that sketch, but comic book artists used to do this kind of thing all the time, either to loosen up before drawing the actual assignment, or to test out a pose, or create a costume reference, or simply to doodle. (John Buscema&#8217;s back-of-the-page sketches were <a href=\"http:\/\/flyingcolorscomics.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/big-john-buscema-life-in-sketches.html\">amazing<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m surprised there isn&#8217;t already a site out there collecting all known examples of this.
