{"id":12335,"date":"2007-12-17T21:12:08","date_gmt":"2007-12-18T02:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=12335"},"modified":"2014-01-08T18:03:31","modified_gmt":"2014-01-08T23:03:31","slug":"if-you-dont-read-this-post-well-kill-this-blogger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2007\/12\/17\/if-you-dont-read-this-post-well-kill-this-blogger\/","title":{"rendered":"If you don&#8217;t read this post, we&#8217;ll kill this blogger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Time Magazine<\/i><\/a>, as part of a feature offering  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/top10\/0,30576,1686204,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">50 Top 10 Lists of 2007<\/a>, shares its choices for the year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/top10\/article\/0,30583,1686204_1686303_1692246,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Top 10 Magazine Covers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winner?<\/p>\n<p>The January 2007 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Texas Monthly<\/i><\/a>, which played off <a href=\"http:\/\/nationallampoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Lampoon<\/a>&#8216;s famous January 1973 issue, the one  which featured the tagline &#8220;If You Don&#8217;t Buy This Magazine, We&#8217;ll Kill This Dog!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/mags_texas_mo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/mags_texas_mo-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"mags_texas_mo\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/mags_texas_mo-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/mags_texas_mo.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As far as newsstand inspirations go, that original cover has been alluded to by subsequent magazines more times than any  other. Its only possible competitors for that record might be the often-spoofed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Janetjackson_rollingstone.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"> Janet Jackson <i>Rolling Stone<\/i> cover<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Vanity_Fair_August_1991.JPG\" target=\"_blank\">Demi Moore <i>Vanity Fair<\/i> cover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t as impressed with this particular cover as much as others seem to have been, regardless of the quality of the Dick Cheney photoshopping, perhaps because   that allusion has by now been so overdone as to have become a cliche.<\/p>\n<p>I keep hoping that someday  a science fiction, fantasy, or horror magazine will pull off a design coup and make one of these lists.
