{"id":11953,"date":"2013-12-11T21:19:08","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T02:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=11953"},"modified":"2013-12-11T21:19:08","modified_gmt":"2013-12-12T02:19:08","slug":"the-mermaid-and-the-bicyclist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2013\/12\/11\/the-mermaid-and-the-bicyclist\/","title":{"rendered":"The mermaid and &#8230; the bicyclist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How much did we love bicycles in 1898? <\/p>\n<p>So much so that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/12\/09\/poignant-1898-magazine-ad-touts-the-most-marvellous-instrument-of-our-age\/\">the January 1898 issue of <em>The Nickell<\/em><\/a> was packed with ads for bikes and biking accessories, such as the Columbia Chainless Bicycle (&#8220;totally unaffected by mud, dust, rain, or sleet&#8221;), the &#8220;Serrate Tread&#8221; Tire (if your dealer doesn&#8217;t have the new &#8217;98 model, &#8220;tell him he&#8217;s not up to date), and <em>The Wheelmen&#8217;s Gazette<\/em> (&#8220;an illustrated monthly magazine devoted to the grandest, healthiest, most manly sport in the world&#8212;cycling&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>But what really proved to me that bicycling wasn&#8217;t just a hobby in those days, but a craze, was the poem &#8220;Ye Ballad of Ye Mermaiden,&#8221; in which a mermaid was spellbound &#8230; by a cyclist. <\/p>\n<p>Or the wheelman&#8217;s &#8220;wondrous shell on which you travel so fast and well,&#8221; anyway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TheNickellMermaidPoem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TheNickellMermaidPoem-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"TheNickellMermaidPoem\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TheNickellMermaidPoem-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TheNickellMermaidPoem-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TheNickellMermaidPoem.jpg 1162w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I assume &#8220;she scorches beneath the sea&#8221; in the poem&#8217;s final line merely meant she was going <em>very<\/em> fast.
