(Or maybe I did, but forgot that I had. I&#8217;m leaning toward the former, though.)<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/08\/29\/george-tuskas-unseen-captain-marvel\/\">I told you about<\/a> a page of George Tuska art intended for <em>Captain Marvel<\/em> #54 which was at the last minute replaced by a Dave Cockrum splash page. Well, as I took a look yesterday at Captain Marvel&#8217;s origin story, first published in <em>Marvel Super-Heroes<\/em> #12 way back in 1967, that proverbial lightbulb went on over my head.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly saw that in his replacement page, Dave had done an homage to the cover which had started it all&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CaptainMarvelComparison.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CaptainMarvelComparison-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"CaptainMarvelComparison\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CaptainMarvelComparison-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CaptainMarvelComparison-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CaptainMarvelComparison.jpg 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;and I&#8217;d never noticed!<\/p>\n<p>Cap&#8217;s walking down a city street toward the reader, filling the page, right foot forward, people pointing, the background crowd mere silhouettes &#8230; it was obviously meant to be a tip of the hat to the Gene Colan classic.<\/p>\n<p>How did I not see that immediately when the art was handed in back in 1977?<\/p>\n<p>A third of a century for the scales to fall from my eyes. Wow.<\/p>\n<p>Surely you had all noticed this a long time ago.
