{"id":10618,"date":"2013-07-07T16:44:34","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T20:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=10618"},"modified":"2013-07-07T16:44:34","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T20:44:34","slug":"what-id-be-typing-with-if-this-were-1893","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2013\/07\/07\/what-id-be-typing-with-if-this-were-1893\/","title":{"rendered":"What I&#8217;d be typing with if this were 1893"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Old friends visited us from New York over the long weekend, and there was much <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/bcwiVWnIsq\/\">baking<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/bcbHHgnIpg\/\">grilling<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/bZlqKPnIi-\/\">blowing stuff up real good<\/a>, all activities that are mandatory when celebrating the 4th of July.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"vine-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/v\/hWr11AnPxlh\/embed\/postcard\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><script async src=\"\/\/platform.vine.co\/static\/scripts\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Last night, we somehow got around to discussing the evolution of the QWERTY keyboard, and then we moved on to praising the IBM Selectric typewriter, much beloved by those of us lucky enough to have owned one during the pre-computer past. Which made me remember that one of the old magazines I own (and in case you don&#8217;t happen to know, I <em>love<\/em> reading newspapers and magazines that are a century or more old) contains multiple ads for typewriters, which were then not so many decades old, at least commercially.<\/p>\n<p>So here  is  what you could have ordered from the back pages of the January 1893 issue of <em>The Cosmopolitan<\/em> &#8230; <em>if<\/em> you were able to make up your mind when faced with the wildly varying styles.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Crandall comes with &#8220;instantly changeable TYPE; eight styles in English.&#8221; What that latter boast means I have no idea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1893CrandallTypewriter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10619\" alt=\"1893CrandallTypewriter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1893CrandallTypewriter-197x300.jpg\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1893CrandallTypewriter-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1893CrandallTypewriter.jpg 532w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hammond offers, among other things, far too many exclamation points: &#8220;Oh!
