And since then, I&#8217;ve met my goal of 10.00 steps\/5 miles every day, topped 15,000 daily steps six times, and yesterday even broke through the 25,000-step barrier!<\/p>\n<p>I was in Chicago over the weekend for my latest visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/09\/18\/next-alinea-the-aviary-and-the-greatest-amuse-bouche-the-universe-ever-gave-a-foodie\/\">Next<\/a>, and spent any time not at the restaurant wandering Chicago&#8217;s streets and museums, walking 18,387 steps (9.15 miles) Saturday and 25,134 steps (12.51 miles Sunday).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the way yesterday&#8217;s steps broke down in 5-minute increments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Steps5262013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10355\" alt=\"Steps5262013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Steps5262013-300x112.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Steps5262013-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Steps5262013-1024x384.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Steps5262013.jpg 1336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was looking forward to getting home and seeing how the Fitbit pie chart broke down my activity for the day, because I&#8217;d been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/06\/14\/what-im-doing-to-stay-alive-a-little-longer\/\">scared straight<\/a> by a study that showed the early deaths awaiting men who sat for more than six hours per day.<\/p>\n<p>I was dismayed to discover&#8212;this.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Sedentary5262013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10356\" alt=\"Sedentary5262013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Sedentary5262013-300x133.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Sedentary5262013-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Sedentary5262013-1024x455.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Sedentary5262013.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though I&#8217;d walked those 12.51 miles yesterday, and it felt as if I&#8217;d been in constant motion, resting but briefly during the day and only sitting for extended periods of time on my flight to Dulles and during the drive home from the airport &#8230; I was still sedentary (during my waking hours, that is) for 9 hours and 26 minutes! <\/p>\n<p>Which is over 50% more than the men I mentioned above, who are 20% more likely to die early.<\/p>\n<p>And that after a day&#8212; a day I&#8217;m unlikely to repeat any time soon&#8212;which left me feeling so drained I thought there were no more steps I could possibly take.<\/p>\n<p>So what am I to do?
