{"id":305,"date":"2011-02-13T22:40:05","date_gmt":"2011-02-14T03:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/"},"modified":"2011-02-21T14:01:22","modified_gmt":"2011-02-21T19:01:22","slug":"the-last-pig-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/writing\/short-fiction\/the-last-pig-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"The Last Pig in the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My original title for this story set in a research facility during a future in which all of the animals in the world are dying was &#8220;Everyone Suspected Susan.&#8221; The editor of <em>Science Fiction Review<\/em>, Elton Elliot, pulled his prefered title from the tale&#8217;s first sentence:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After the last pig in the world disappeared from the lab, we all suspected Susan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although I didn&#8217;t object to the change back in the Summer of 1991, when this was published, when the time comes to reprint the story in a collection of science-fiction stories (though who knows if that will happen, considering I didn&#8217;t bother reprinting it in my collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/writing\/books\/what-we-still-talk-about\/\"><em> What We Still Talk About<\/em><\/a>), I&#8217;ll restore my original title. I prefer being a little less in-your-face about the story&#8217;s subject matter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Science Fiction Review<\/em> was an interesting magazine that should have lasted longer than it did. It was killed, I think, by its attempt to grow too fast too soon.
