My Scarecrow character first appeared in Dead of Night #11 (August 1975), but that was only after he didn’t appear in several other Marvel magazines — and I just stumbled across forgotten evidence of one of them.

His original home was intended to be the black-and-white magazine Monsters Unleashed, as this ad from its ninth issue (December 1974) shows.

Alas, Monsters Unleashed was cancelled before that could happen.

Then, he was going to run as a back-up in Giant-Size Werewolf by Night … which also got the axe before he could appear.

After the bad luck that began The Scarecrow’s birth, I suppose I should have predicted my character wouldn’t have a long life … but 19-year-old me was too hopeful for that.
