Since the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America recently announced the start of its nominations period for the Nebula Awards—and the recommendations period for the Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association is ongoing—plus all of my 2017 short stories have now been published—well, it’s that time of year again.

Since all the cool kids seem to be doing it, I’ve assembled info about this year’s publications in one place so eligible voting members of both organizations can take them into consideration.

And so …

First up, three science fiction tales—

“After the Harvest, Before the Fall”

This was the story that broke my 44-year dry spell with Analog. It’s an 11,600-word novelette described by the magazine as “people born to die struggling to live.” It takes place in a future in which the rich and powerful get to order new bodies whenever they wish, and the religion those who are harvested have created to deal with their oppression.

“Pity This Busy Monster Not”

This 6,425-word far-future short story was published in Adam’s Ladder, an anthology edited by Darren Speegle and Michael Bailey. It takes place both now and millions of years in the future, as someone or something is trying to decide what to do next.

“How Val Finally Escaped from the Basement”

This 9,425-word story was published in the November/December Analog, meaning I had fiction in that magazine’s first and last issue of 2017. After Val’s uncle dies, he makes a startling discovery in the basement, one which changes the world for the better. Not his world, however …

I also published two horror novelettes—

“Only Humans Can Lie”

“Faking It Until Forever Comes”

These two zombie novelettes, coming in at 13,750 and 13,200 words respectively, were published together in a mini-collection from Written Backwards under the title Liars, Fakers, and the Dead Who Eat Them. The back cover of the volume describes the book like so—

A Vegan chef believes meat is murder. A determined waitress longs for stardom. He hopes to convince the world to abandon killing animals. She hopes to convince a director to make her a star. Both of those hopes are challenged when a zombie apocalypse traps them in small towns where their dreams might come true—or else be crushed under the weight of an invading undead horde. Join Tim and Shelley as they struggle to survive—and retain their sanity—in a world where death suddenly holds no dominion.

Though the book as a whole is too short to be nominated in the HWA’s Superior Achievement in a Collection category, the individual novelettes are eligible in the Superior Achievement in Long Fiction category.

And finally, my lone fantasy story of the year—

“One of the Lucky Ones”

This 5,425-word contemporary fantasy appeared in the Spring 2017 issue of Space and Time, an astonishing 35 years after my first publication there. In it, after a man makes a serendipitous stop in a used bookshop and comes across a stack of old New Yorker magazines, he begins to uncover the secret history of his own life.

And that’s it for 2017! As for 2018, I already have three science fiction stories scheduled to come out in magazines and anthologies, and I can’t wait for you to read them.
