Hey, don’t forget Murphy Anderson!

Have you seen the cover to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly? It features a huge image of Superman zooming at the reader, above two other smaller Superman drawings plus photos of five actors who’ve played the part in movies and on TV.

Does the main drawing look familiar to you? It did to me.

I immediately recognized as it having been taken from an old issue of Action Comics—issue #419, to be specific, cover-dated December 1972.

The original cover was pencilled by Neal Adams and inked by Murphy Anderson (except for the photographic background, of course, which had been snapped by Jack Adler). But you’d never know it by the fine print on page 3 of EW, which gives credit to the three Superman drawings on the cover only to DC Entertainment.

Luckily, Neal does get a mention as part of a spread on pages 28-29, which feature 18 headshots in two Brady Bunch-like 3 x 3 squares.

But—though the pencillers get shout-outs, no mention is made of any of the inkers involved. Not Murphy Anderson, who inked Neal Adams, nor Stan Kaye, who inked the Curt Swan headshot taken from Action #242, nor any of the other inkers (whose names can easily be found at the the Grand Comics Database site).

Pity the poor inkers! Guess (according to Entertainment Weekly‘s research department, anyway) they’re not really artists.
