God bless The ‘merica Burger

Posted by: Scott    Tags:  food, San Diego Comic-Con    Posted date:  July 14, 2012  |  No comment

I’ve taken restaurant advice from Man v. Food plenty of times. Last year, I took restaurant advice from Food Wars. But it wasn’t until Comic-Con 2012 that I ate at a restaurant I learned about from boingboing.

Slater’s 50/50 is known for its signature burger made of 50% ground beef and 50% ground bacon, but what attracted my attention was the Burger of the Month for July (covered with astonishment by boingboing, The Huffington Post and a ton of other sites)—The ‘merica Burger!

Why were they all so aghast? Because The ‘merica Burger—as you can see from the sign below, which is hung between the restaurant’s restrooms—is composed of “100% ground bacon plus thick cut bacon, a sunny side up egg, our new ‘bacon island’ dressing all topped with bacon cheddar cheese.”

Yowza!

When I read the article, I wondered where the restaurant serving this limited-time burger was located, and after seeing it was in San Diego, I thought—Wait a minute! I’ll be in San Diego this month! So you know I had to try one. After all, when Kraze Burgers, a Korean hamburger chain, opened its first location in the U.S., I was there.

So late last night, once I was able to take a break from covering Comic-Con, I headed off to Slater’s 50/50 with frequent foodie adventurer Mike Willmoth at the wheel and his artist friend Franchesco riding shotgun.

The ‘merica Burger was available in three sizes—six ounces, 12 ounces, or a pound. I went with the smallest of the burgers, which I assure you was plenty. Here’s what it looked like when it was brought to our table.

And now take a look at it sliced.

You know you want one!

Here’s the good news—I think I may have finally found a burger to rival The Thurman Burger at the Thurman Cafe in Columbus. (Though it might not be a fair fight, for how can you compete with 100% bacon? Plus once you’ve gone all bacon, can it truly be considered a hamburger anyway, rather than a gift brought down by angels from up above?) The meat was delicious and perfectly cooked, the roll was top notch, and the egg helped the various flavors meld together just right. This was not the monstrosity that some other bloggers who most likely didn’t taste the thing and only wrote about it from pictures and a menu would have you believe.

Here’s the bad news, though—you’ve only got until July 31st to eat this bad boy. After that, it goes into the history books, just like with past Slater’s Burgers of the Month such as the Guinness and Corned Beef Burger, the Pulled Pork Burger, and (here comes the one that astounds me) the Chili Cheese Frito Burger.

Better book those plane tickets now!
