Scott Edelman at Cubaficción 2002
I recently visited Havana to research the past, present and future state of Cuban science fiction. I timed the visit to coincide with Cubaficción 2002, their annual national convention, so that I'd have the opportunity to meet as many writers, editors, publisher and readers as possible. Locus publisher Charles N. Brown and executive editor Jennifer A. Hall were also in attendance in Havana. It will take a long while for me to digest all that I saw there, but here are some of the people who helped teach me about Cuba's unique brand of the literature of the fantastic. Discussions of science fiction, fantasy and horror occurred not just within conference halls, but also out in the streets, as writer and editors accompanied us throughout Havana, explaining how Cuba's unique culture influenced its particular brand of the genre.
