Hey! My tweet about the Alinea baby appeared on Good Morning America

I’ve eaten at both of Grant Achatz’s Chicago restaurants, Alinea and Next, so when the Chef tweeted about a crying baby that was making other diners mad, I definitely had an opinion.

And as I just learned from my daily perusal of the foodie site Eater, that opinion appeared, albeit edited, on this morning’s edition of Good Morning America. (My truncated tweet and my Twitter icon appear at the 1:26 mark.)

What appeared on the screen wasn’t my actual tweet, but rather (as you’ll see below) the final few words of my third tweet on the subject.

My first response to Achatz was …

@Gachatz I would not have been pleased. Unless we had a sitter, we did no fine dining when we had a child that age. Not fair to others.

Followed by …

@Gachatz What's being purchased at @NextRestaurant is far more than mere food. It is ambiance. Babies shouldn't go to the opera either.

It’s my third tweet that Good Morning America cut down to appear on screen.

@NealjBrown @Gachatz Huh. Was it @Alinea? Wonder why my first assumption was @NextRestaurant? In any case, my feelings stand. No babies.

As you can see, I’d been a little confused at first, thinking that the eight-month-old had been brought to Next, not Alinea, and what I meant when I wrote “my feelings stand” was that my feelings in the previous two tweets were as true for the latter restaurant as for the former. In any case, that became this …

AlineaBabyTweet

… which I think left it unclear what “my feelings stand” meant. Guess it was too complicated a tweet for them to run as is, what with four ampersands.

I’m amazed this incident has gone viral. Did you know that the Alinea baby even has its own (satirical) Twitter account?

A final note: No, I don’t hate babies. Hey, I was once one myself. And when I find myself near a baby on a plane, I’m not put off, but instead spend the flight playing peekaboo. So I’m perfectly willing to let babies be babies. But at Alinea? Nah. Just not the place.
