Three little foxes

Posted by: Scott    Tags:  Outdoors    Posted date:  May 30, 2013  |  3 Comments

We recently spotted a groundhog living under our shed, and have been pondering how best to get rid of it. So this morning, when Irene saw tiny creatures frolicking at the base of the shed, she thought—we’re too late! The groundhog’s already given birth!

But when we looked more closely, we saw those weren’t tiny groundhogs gamboling … they were baby foxes!

Three of them, in fact!

If you’d care to see what we saw, check out the video below. The babies occasionally run off into the shade and become somewhat invisible, but still …

Perhaps I should feel guilty for privileging foxes (which we hope will stay) over groundhogs (which we wish would vamoose). But I don’t feel guilty in the least!

We have four cubs next door, rapidly approaching the gangly stage. We tend to celebrate foxes because there is a rat problem round here, and the foxes do their part keeping them down.

I, too, had three kits this year. Dumber than dirt at first. They’re usually way across the field, but this year used a woodchuck hole on our driveway, of all places. At first the kits were right in the road at the beginning of May. Now I only see them if I’m out at night. I left them some kitten chow for a couple of weeks to help with food. It was like a toddler being around again. They left their toys all over the gravel driveway (which is hundreds of feet long). I found raccoon skins, woodchuck skins, bunny skins…and a fish head and spine. That one threw me. I think Mom or Dad was dumpster diving at the neighbor’s. They’ve been marvelous to watch the past month. Good luck to them as I don’t have chickens any longer. Yes, I found someone else’s chicken carcass, too.

They’re like a cross between puppies and kittens!
